2017 Demographia International Housing Affordability Survey has placed Vancouver as the 3rd least affordable city in the world. Hong Kong (China) and Sydney (Australia) are the top 2 in the list. Vancouver has increased the Median multiple from 10.8 to 11.8 in a year, hence adding one year equivalent of median housing income to the price in 1 year. Los Angeles was worse, adding 14 months equivalent of median household income (median multiple of 9.3 this year vs 8.1 last year).

The survey took into account 406 metros in nine countries: Australia, Canada, China, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States.
